“April 14, 1948 I saw his name today. I was at the feed store in Romero, because I had driven up to the ranch for the weekend and Papa asked me to pick up the mineral salt order, and I went inside and there was a bulletin board by the door, the kind every feed store has, thumbtacked with for-sale notices and livestock ads and flyers for dances and a yellowed government pamphlet about brucellosis that has been there since 1943, and in the middle of it all there was a newspaper clipping, torn f”
