“April 22, 1947 I was at dinner at the Morrisons' on Friday evening. It was one of those evenings that Tessa arranges for me because she believes that sitting in my room reading Willa Cather for the fourteenth time is not adequate social engagement for a twenty-year-old woman, and she is probably right about that, though I would argue that Willa Cather has never let me down, which is more than I can say for most social engagements.”
