Clauson Rodeo Draws Record Crowd

CLAUSON — The annual Clauson Rodeo drew its largest crowd in a decade over the weekend, with an estimated 2,400 spectators attending Saturday's performance.

Saddle Bronc: 1. Adam Connor, La Conquistadora, NM — 82 pts (drew Sidewinder). 2. Billy Hargrove, Clauson — 78. 3. Pete Salazar, Romero — 74.

Tie-Down Roping: 1. J.D. Reeves, Carrolton — 11.4 sec. 2. Adam Connor, La Conquistadora — 12.1. 3. Harley Bates, Clauson — 13.8.

Bull Riding: 1. Floyd "Cyclone" Gibbs, Carrolton — 86 pts. 2. Chet Williams, Romero — 79.

Barrel Racing: 1. Mary Ellen Tafoya, Carrolton — 17.2 sec.

Connor, a returning Army veteran new to the circuit this season, earned the day's highest saddle bronc score on Buckhorn Brothers' Sidewinder, a horse that had bucked off its previous four riders.

Livestock Market Report — Romero Auction

ROMERO — Wednesday sale, September 11. Receipts: 684 head.

Choice feeder steers, 400-500 lbs: $22.50–$24.00/cwt. Choice feeder steers, 500-600 lbs: $21.00–$22.80/cwt. Choice feeder heifers: $19.50–$21.00/cwt. Medium feeder cattle: $17.00–$19.00/cwt. Stocker cows: $12.00–$14.50/cwt. Bulls: $15.00–$17.50/cwt.

Market steady to strong. Demand good for quality feeders. Several outside buyers were active. Light calves bringing premium prices on strong grass conditions to the east.

Next sale: Wednesday, September 18.

Library Hours

The Romero Public Library will be open Tuesday and Thursday afternoons, 2 to 5 p.m., and Saturday mornings, 9 a.m. to noon. New books received this month include novels by Zane Grey and Louis L’Amour. Librarian Mrs. Fresquez welcomes donations.

School Board to Meet Tuesday

The Romero School Board will hold its regular monthly meeting Tuesday evening at the schoolhouse. Superintendent Gallegos reports enrollment remains steady at forty-seven pupils across all grades. The board is expected to consider repairs to the north wall, damaged during last month’s windstorm.

Romero Theatre — This Week

Friday and Saturday: “My Darling Clementine” starring Henry Fonda and Victor Mature, directed by John Ford. Sunday matinee: “The Yearling” with Gregory Peck. Shows at 7 p.m., Sunday matinee 2 p.m. General admission 25 cents, children 10 cents.

Volunteer Fire Dept. Holds Drill

The Romero Volunteer Fire Department conducted a practice drill Saturday at the old Baca warehouse on Railroad Street. Chief Medina reports response time was under four minutes. The department’s 1938 pumper truck has been overhauled and is in serviceable condition.

Mora County Fair Dates Set

The Mora County Fair Board has set this year’s fair for the third week of September. Superintendent of livestock entries R.C. Trujillo reminds all exhibitors that entry forms must be filed by the first of the month. The board has secured a traveling carnival for the midway and expects entries in all divisions to exceed last year.

Ladies Aid Plans Bake Sale

The Methodist Ladies Aid Society will hold its annual bake sale Saturday morning at the church hall on Plaza Street. Mrs. Archuleta and Mrs. Baca serve as chairwomen. Donations of pies, cakes, bread, and preserves are welcome. All proceeds benefit the organ repair fund.

Precipitation: 0.14 inches (Mon., trace). Season total: 9.8 inches, 1.2 inches below normal.

High temperatures ranged from 88° (Monday) to 79° (Thursday). Low temperatures ranged from 52° (Wednesday) to 58° (Saturday). Winds light and variable through mid-week, gusting to 25 mph from the southwest on Friday.

The monsoon appears to have ended early this year. Ranchers report range conditions fair to good on the mesas, below average in the lower elevations where July rains missed. Stock water adequate in the Canadian and La Cinta but declining in dirt tanks on the eastern ranges.

Outlook: Dry through the week. First frost expected by month's end.

Hunting Season Reminder

State Game Warden F.C. Lopez reminds all hunters that deer season opens October 20. Licenses available at Ben’s Mercantile and the Post Office. Bag limit one buck, forked horn or better. Report all kills to the district warden within twenty-four hours.

Stockmen’s Association Elects Officers

The Mora County Stockmen’s Association held its annual election at the courthouse in Mora. Officers for the coming year: President, R.T. Gallegos; Vice President, C.M. Vigil; Secretary-Treasurer, J.P. Salazar. The association voted to oppose the proposed increase in federal grazing fees.

Mr. and Mrs. Henry Salazar of Springer visited relatives in Romero over the weekend. — Mrs. Adela Montoya is recovering at home following surgery at St. Mary’s Hospital in Las Vegas. — Bobby Trujillo has returned to New Mexico A&M after spending the holiday at home.

Irrigation District Meeting

The Upper Mora Irrigation District will hold its quarterly meeting at the courthouse in Mora on the second Tuesday of next month. All water-rights holders are urged to attend. The board will discuss allocation schedules for the coming season and hear a report from the state engineer’s office on stream flow projections.

Garden Club Notes

The Romero Garden Club met at the home of Mrs. Felix Martinez. Members discussed fall planting of iris and daffodil bulbs. Mrs. Archuleta demonstrated proper technique for dividing perennials. Next meeting October 12 at Mrs. Baca’s home.

County Agent Reports on Range

County Agricultural Agent Harold Finch reports range conditions across Mora County remain favorable following recent rains. Stockmen are reminded that the fall dipping requirement for all cattle begins October 15. Contact the county extension office in Las Vegas to schedule inspection dates.

4-H Club Selects Fair Projects

The Romero 4-H Club met Saturday at the home of club leader Mrs. C. Montoya. Members selected projects for the Mora County Fair, including livestock, gardening, and sewing entries. Junior livestock judging practice begins next month. New members between ten and eighteen welcome.

Springer Broncos Win Opener

The Springer High School Broncos opened their football season Friday with a 14–6 victory over the Wagon Mound Panthers. Quarterback Billy Tapia scored both touchdowns on runs of twelve and thirty-one yards. Coach Armijo praised his defense. Broncos play at Mora next Friday.

Wool Prices Hold Steady at Boston Market

New Mexico wool growers will find encouragement in this week’s Boston market report. Territory fine staple held at $1.62 per grease pound, unchanged from the previous week. Buyers report strong demand from Eastern mills. Local growers are advised to hold fleeces in dry storage until the spring clip pool is organized through the cooperative.

Highway 85 Bridge Work Continues

State Highway Department crews continue bridge repair work on Highway 85 south of Romero. Traffic is reduced to one lane with flagman during working hours. Motorists are advised to allow extra travel time when heading toward Las Vegas. Work expected complete by mid-October.

New Telephone Line to Mesa Verde

Mountain States Telephone Company has completed installation of a new line extending service to the Mesa Verde community east of Romero. Twelve new subscribers connected on a four-party line. Additional extensions planned for the coming year as materials become available.

Acequia Commission Sets Spring Cleaning

The Romero Acequia Commission met Wednesday and set the annual spring cleaning for the first Saturday in April. All water-rights holders on the community ditch are required to furnish one able-bodied worker or pay the two-dollar assessment. Commissioner Vigil reports the headgate needs replacement before irrigation season.
